The monument placing in the historical framework Risen over the foundations of the medieval church dedicated to S. Gregory, the church of S. Rocco was built in 1667 (the design was by Francesco Lanfranchi) by the homonym Confraternity, now disappeared. The Confraternity was born in 1598, Turin, with the task of burying dead people left in the streets by the pestilence. In 1890, the façade of the church was destroyed to allow the widening of via S. Francesco d'Assisi; this violation involved the missing of the façade built in 1669 and elaborated again, with the contribute of Vittorio Amedeo III, in 1780. The façade we see at present, in fact, was reconstructed in the end of 1800; the two statues of S. Rocco and S. Espedito in the two niches go back to 1924. In the 80s, concerts of "Settembre Musica" were held in the church. Now it is opened only for the Sunday Masses, and we can admire the luminous slender dome and the altar of the '700s, made precious by Piemonte coloured marbles, by Vittone. |
